Wally Has Gone Back Inside the Wall

Wally Has Gone Back Inside the Wall

The Boston Red Sox mascot, who lived undiscovered inside the Green Monster for years before emerging as the team's public face, has apparently reversed the process. The access door was found latched from the inside.

BOSTON — The access door on the left field wall at Fenway Park was found ajar Monday morning, following Sunday’s 8-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, the team’s eighth in nine games.

A member of the grounds crew noticed it during pre-dawn field prep. No maintenance had been scheduled. Inside the passage, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, were a Fenway frank wrapper, a 2026 opening day program with the lineup circled in green marker, and several small tufts of green fur near the door frame.

Wally has gone back in.

A Red Sox spokesperson said the organization is “aware of the situation and respects Wally’s need for personal time.” No timeline was given for his return.

Those familiar with Wally’s history note that he lived inside the wall for years before a grounds crew discovered him in 1997 — a simpler time for the monster. Before the pennants and the parades and the eight losses in nine games.

The door, per the grounds crew, was latched from the inside.

Roman Anthony, when asked about Wally’s whereabouts before Monday’s game, said only: “I don’t blame him.”

The Red Sox are 2-8.
