Masked Rider, Moved by Sorsby, Discloses Own Addictions; Has No Plans to Address Them
The Texas Tech Masked Rider, inspired by Brendan Sorsby's courage, spouts off own addictions from smells to confusing cravings in unnecessary press conference.
LUBBOCK — The Texas Tech Masked Rider held a brief press conference Monday afternoon in the south end zone of Jones AT&T Stadium, saying they had been moved by quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s public disclosure and wanted to use this moment to be honest with the public, the program, and themselves.
They then read from a prepared statement for approximately eleven minutes.
The Rider disclosed that they have struggled for some time with several things they described as addictions: firearms and the discharge of firearms; football; sports broadly construed; wearing a mask, which they clarified is “not a costume choice, it’s more of a need”; and the specific smell produced when a farrier applies a hot shoe to a horse. They paused after the last one. No one in attendance said anything.
They then mentioned a craving for Texas Rangers. Immediately followed by a moment of vulnerability. Then they moved on.
Reporters asked, following the statement, when the Masked Rider planned to enter treatment. They appeared to find the question puzzling.
“I’m not,” they said, or words to that effect. They had simply been inspired by Brendan. And they thought we should know.
Their horse was brought around. They left.

Correction: A previous version of this article referred to the Masked Rider using he/him pronouns throughout. The Masked Rider uses they/them pronouns. We regret the error and have updated the piece accordingly. We would have asked at the press conference, but they left before we had the chance. Their horse was already around.
