INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Jonathan the Husky was not ready to mascot on Monday night. He had attempted to table the matter of the women’s 54-game winning streak until after the championship game. He had not succeeded.

Reports from the arena: he arrived late to the starting lineup introductions, executed two of his four scheduled crowd interactions, and at one point stood motionless for what witnesses estimated at ninety seconds.

Michigan won by six. Jonathan has not issued a statement. Sources close to him say he blames himself for the loss. One source overheard him in the tunnel: “I just wasn’t the mascot I was supposed to be out there tonight. Man’s best friend. That’s the job. I was maybe man’s distracted colleague.”

Correction: A previous version of this article stated that the championship game was played in Glendale, Arizona, and that Michigan won by nine points. The game was played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Michigan won 69–63, a margin of six. Jonathan’s self-assessment remains unchanged.
